I have done this a few times and honestly if I were you I would do one of two things

1. Scuff the current finish on your guitar (to give the primer something to stick to) then prime and paint your guitar.
or
2. just buy a new unfinished body from GFS http://store.guitarfetish.com/unststbohshs.html ...

Yeah my ground up Jag build was $820 but I went with all American parts and guts

I have tried this with tinted clear to make a white pickguard look older, I scuffed the plastic to try and let the paint stick better but it still came off in the picking areas within a month

Yeah I was thinking of getting the SG kit as well just for fun, I was thinking of going one of two ways white with gold hardware and 3 humbuckers (like Gibson did a bit back in the day) or cherry stain with P-90's
