Yeh, you're pretty much out of luck finding shortcuts to unstringing the inside strings on a Rick 12, especially if you have the "R" tailpiece where you hook two string-ends in each slot.

B8 hats sound passable as long as they are never opened. After playing a pair closed, the ZINGG open sound is a complete nonsequitur. Find some used Zildjian A's like New Beats, Quick Beats, or Rock hats.

(Note however that a single B8 on the bottom with a cast Zildjian on top sounds awesome.)

The smaller the knob you use on a pot, the farther it'll sweep with a given amount of twist. Of course, a smaller knob gives you less leverage against the pot's internal friction so it's harder to twist. But that may be one option.

Sounds power supply-ish, though possibly tube-related. Clean them tube pins first and see if that makes a diff. If you've got a choob rectifier, that might be a suspect.

+1 on Aeon's settings; I often do something like Treb 4 Mid 7 Bass 4, and turn the Bright switch on. That keeps the treble under control but still adds some sparkle up above the general range of the Treble knob.
