You can pop the tuning peg and gear out of the casing pretty easily - then you could swap the covers, unless I'm missing some other difference?

I've got a 61 duo sonic neck that has single row tuners - the say 'deluxe' down the middle, like your replacement one. I assumed these had never left the neck. Does that mean that mine are all replacements?

i don't think shimming changes tone noticeably at all I guess cos they're normally a thin sliver, and only under one end of the contacting surfaces. But you know sometimes if when playing your headstock contacts a hollow wall, and you hear it... surely a piece of thick notebook cardboard would ...
