anytime u put a resistor across the lugs of a pot it will change the overall value of the pot but it will not be a smooth taper across the pot, it will work but not the same as just using a 250k pot

that's a terrible speaker design.
if you know not to touch anything when it's plugged in and you learn how to drain caps then you won't kill yourself.
a new amp will have a pcb which will be much more confusing. musicmaster bass amps are very simple circuits and will be much easier to figure out ...
