how do guitar shops actually work?

do they simply buy from dano itself at stock price, at which point danelectro is now out of the loop and buying it new isn't actually giving any money to danelectro, or are they sold with a certain percentage of the amount going to dano? or is it all done through a distributor so dano is counting their cash way before it hits shop floors.

don't get me wrong , i'm all against giving them anything but when you're talking about giving them money by buying new i'm still not sure that's correct.

it does create more demand for products i suppose which in turn ups their profits so you are in a way ginving them money but it's very indirect and people are talking as though £5 out of my £25 is going into the homophobe's grubby mits.
i'm not reasoning against the boycott, otherwise i'd currently have a cool cat fuzz and chorus, just keeping it logical in my own head.

anyway, comapring to UK prices in general thats a crazy good deal and i think they look pretty mega in red compared to black.

I'm not 100% sure, but in My expereicne the music store buys from the manufacturer, at which point the manufacturer is completely done with the sale. The retailer marks up the price (To a price agreed upon by the manufacturer) and sells it.

For example, Dwarfcraft Shiva sells for the Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) of $180. Dealers like to make 50% on a unit, so they buy them from me for $120, which trickles down to about $50 in my pocket.

BUt if I decide to start donating money to outlaw, oh I don't know, negro spirituals, and I get boycotted, the store doesn't buy any more and I pay for my sins out my pocketbook.

It kind of hangs with the "oh, it's just one vote, just $25, just one...." The strangest thing to me, about gettign into this business is that there are so goddam many people in this world, there are a lot of people JUST LIKE YOU. Well, not just like you, but I didn'thtink there would be ten people on earth who liked my first pedal, well, it's been about a year and I've probably sold close to a hundred.

What I'm saying is that if everybody thinks they're the only one, and that excuses something they know is bad, then that adds up to a lot of people.

right. your money does not go directly to danelectro. you are supporting them by buying their products though. no one is going to stock their products if they didn't think they were going to sell. it's not like, "even if I don't buy their products they are making money anyway because the store buys it from them, not me." they need you to buy their products or the store doesn't buy anymore. and I think in some cases they can send it back.

I would have put this in the original post, but I didn't want this to devolve into a discussion about what a bunch of twats Evets Corp -- and specifically Stephen Ridinger -- are.

Before most of us were even born, Nat Daniel founded Danelectro. He was a very innovative man, if this bit of history written by his son is to be believed. People loved -- and continue to love -- Danelectro guitars. They ceased business in 1969. It seems at some point in the 90s, the name was acquired by a giant, evil, baby-smothering corporation that reissued some of the more popular guitars, and they continue to sell reissues to this day.

I think Danelectro is bigger and larger than the company that happens to own the rights to the name at this point in time. The idea that the purchase of a used instrument is somehow fueling Stephen Ridinger's thirst for infant blood is ridiculous. It seems illogical to assume that if everyone stopped buying and selling all Danelectro instruments and products, the demand would be eliminated and the name could effectively be erased from history.

I see this situation thusly: some guy that owns a corporation somewhere gave some money to a cause that some people (including me) disagree with. By not purchasing any new products from the company, you can stand tall and know that your hard-earned dollars aren't going into the evil-doer's pocket. I think one of the best things to do is to use the situation to raise awareness, as fellow ShortScalers aen, letsgocoyote, and others have done with Pedals For Peace.

Also, take a moment to consider the fact that, as an active consumer of commercially-produced goods, one probably indirectly puts money in the pockets of some pretty disgusting human beings along the way. Even our beloved Fender Musical Instruments Corporation is an insanely large multi-national company that owns the rights to some legendary product names, and most likely supports fetus rape or something.

Or splurge $800-1200 on a vintage one like I did. Seriously, the old ones are amazing. Especially the '50s ones that still used Kluson-made tuners and had thick stainless steel bridges - the only Dano bridges that don't bow with heavy strings. Plus the binding tape actually stays stuck on the OGs, probably cause it's glued down with some medieval glue that causes cancer.

No worries; I didn't mean for it to be directed at you. The whole thing came about after discussing this subject the other night with my lady and some friends, during which a bunch of hypothetical viewpoints were imagined.

But there is no company that really fills the nitch they have. Buying a $200 glitch pedal cause you want to support Gay Rights seems idiotic to me, you could just give $200 dollars to any Gay Rights Charity, or the people who already make these pedals can take some of their profits from the pedals they already make if they feel so strongly about it. The pedals for peace is just bullshit consumerism as I expressed in another thread about this sort of thing. Especially the e13 person, he already make a gazillion different products that are all similar, so who really needs another under this guise. More cosumerism to fight bigotry seems like fighting half a battle to me. That's just my opinion, I'm sure ya'll will disagree but whatever.

Squier is nowhere near as good, way more boring, only has a few good models and they cost $350 bucks, so like $100 bucks more street price than most Danos. You'll be hard pressed to find one. There are currently one overdrive and two different octave fuzzes, though.

They don't even make pedals anymore. Would it even be supporting them if I bought a pedal new from a shop? I assume the pedal is already bought and paid for from Danelectro, I don't suppose they would do a consignment deal for such a low price item.

On the other hand, buying a guitar would cause the shop to order another, even if the model you bought is discontinued, so I suppose in that way you would be supporting them.

But also: buying a used guitar could keep the resale value high, and people would be inclined to buy new ones because they know they can sell them profitably if they don't like them.

Just something to think about.

Not anymore, maybe the old models. All the new Danelectro models are at least 100 more than the most expensive Squiers, sometimes much more.

I wouldn't even say their pedals are quality, but they are distinct and not copies. I've had 2 break, one has problems with the power jack and always had, and another picks up radio and never sounded good, before or after modding. Still some are fascinating.

Okay, so fuck Danelectro/Evets because of the Prop 8 stuff, but this guitar was $99 and lessened by a $25 promo card they sent me in the mail for buying some stuff (EHX Pulsar, on sale for $59 at the time) on President's Day.

It's a DC 59, which I believe was reissued from 1998-2001. (Perhaps a more-knowledgable Dano person can school me on this.) I cleaned it up and retstrung it with some 10s and it sounds great. I've always wanted one and was considering buying the Dano 63, but went sour on them after reading about Ridinger's donations. I have no remorse for buying this, as my money isn't going to them -- not to mention it was a sweet deal.

The only thing that sucks is the strap buttons. They're tapered and seem to be held in by the same magic that holds the strings in on an acoustic guitar, but they feel like they'll come out with any great rockin'. I was thinking of using good ol' 3M 3501 epoxy to keep them in place.
