Who uses a compressor?

As the title suggests...do you use a compressor pedal?
Why? How often? What does it do for you?

Just watched Mike's MXR vs Behringer video and the Dyna Comp sounds pretty damn good.

I have and use a EHX Soul Preacher, when the mood takes me. I like the kinda funky edge you can get off it. Also can get some nice Blooms for the slow setting. I tend to look on it as another effect on my board rather than something I have on all the time.

I had an old Boss CS-2 a while back. Have a look around for one, they can go quite cheap.

I use a Boss CS-3 compressor / sustainer also.

I find its good for home use / studio & recording ... just takes the edge off things (to avoid neighbours complaining !)... and helps sustain notes long which can be quite a big bonus on Fenders. Sound great along side the micro pog / delay for nice organ like sounds. Good for funky percussive riffs too . I tired using in during a rehearsal only once and I was lost in the mix regardless of volume... so yeah I think for me home / studio only. Soon It'll probably end up in my box of reserve guitar stuff, along with the cry baby wah & and dano cool cat drive. Still keepers though.

I recently Got myself a Boss CS3 which had some sorta mod thing done to it... I find it really works well with tightening up my clean tone and making it a more full sound, but so far not so usefull when using a dirty sound ... I will continue to experiment though...

I have Euans old Dyna Comp. Its one of the best imo.
I've been using it with the Sound City 30, beforehand my playing sounded a bit 'broken' and uneven (maybe the cheap chinese valves?) but with the Dyna it is a vast improvement. Sounds more fluid, uniform and even.

I've used it as a boost for solos, clean boost for Johnny Marr kind of chord stuff (it makes notes stand out without clipping the signal) and as mentioned to tidy up the loose ends in my sound. They balance up old guitars too, any dead spots or varying volume across a pickups magnetic field can be tidied up to a degree.
Compression is overlooked by guitarists usually, yet a studio engineer will mould your sound with it.

Whoah! Triple post?

I've always been tempted by a compressor. I can sort of see why I'd want one, but I don't think I'd ever spend the coin on one, to be honest.

Really? You can get a behringer dyna comp clone for twenty quid.

Wouldn't be THAT much of a loss if you didn't like it or something.

i had a boss CS-3, that is now belongs to othomas2. i never got it to work as i would of liked it too. i was after that compressed floyd tone, which is a dynacomp.

I have Tim's Dyna Comp clone on my board...

The reason I like it isn't because I like the way it sounds... but because I like the 'feel' of playing better when it's on

If I was a clean guitar player a comp would be the first pedal for me.
I know Andy Summers used one extensively in The Police, I think it was an old Ross model which are now sought after.

I'm not sure how the compressor does it, but it seems to dampen the bass frequencies a little making everything more shimmery. this is great for clean tones or any kind of jangley rocking stuff.

So my old boss didn't lend me his Dyna comp in the end...instead he brought this to work for me yesterday:

I've only played on it briefly last night, and will give it a proper testing this afternoon, but it sounded really good. Very subtle...maybe a bit too much so, not that I want an overly compressed sound, but seemed like I had to have the compress knob up quite high (3 o'clock) to get a noticable effect. I need to play around with it a bit more.
