hey all,
i've been wanting to get something with humbuckers again. don't seem to have a guitar with any in or at least a decent bucker in it. i've noticed a shop local to me is selling these.

anyone played or tried one? i know benecol has the tokai sg, but can't remember which model.
they seem to have good review, pitched a bit higher than an epiphone standard.

The MIJ ones (identified by two screw trussrod covers) are amazing. The Korean ones (three screw covers) aren't much different from Epiphones. Save another £100 and go MIJ; for the money, there's a huge difference.

If You go by or ring him up.. Can You ask about the firebird clone,that looks nice.. and the price on the two pickup model.

I am starting to like the strange looks of it.

You want this cove. He's a gent, up your way, and has some lovely Tokais for fair prices. I don't think he's actually got premises, but when I spoke to him, he was happy to meet me at his lockup for me to try a few. He also might take a trade.

That Firebird is nice, but Korean. I can't stress this enough: to see what all the fuss is about with Tokais, you need to buy a Japanese one.

for the extra £100 or so could you not pickup a Gibson studio/special?

You could, but why? Tokais knock the spots off the grown-up Gibsons, never mind their Tesco Value range.

Gibsons would definitely have better resale; rightly or wrongly it's a fact.

Resale-wise, undoubtedly, but there's a world of difference between a £500 Tokai and a £500 Gibson.

True dat, I'm no fan, personally. I'd rather go for a solid Epiphone every time.

I'm not an expert at all on Gibson-type guitars or Tokai. But for the price of the Tokai japanese range you could get a Burny Les Paul, which as I said I'm no expert on but the reviews online look good and some of the range they have had on ebay look awesome.

Yeah I'm in the same quandry. Need a Les Paul, a really good one, to fulfill my 70s rock dreams. I'm currently erring towards an 82 Ibanez Artist in hooker red on ebay.

Everyone certainly seems to be If it was me and I was going to get anything but a Gibson. I think based onr eviews etc I'd be looking at this beauty

Burny are another good Japanese Gibson cloning brand. So yes, for the price of a Tokai, yu could buy a Burny. Or a Greco, or an Edwards, or an Orville etc etc.

Mike, I'm not (much) of a corksniffer, but Tokais are definitely a cut above Epis, not that I've not played a few nice Epis. Tim, you have a PM incoming...

Anyway at some point I'll get my act together and pick up Rob's Gold-Top.

i went out this morning, spent a lot of time going between a nice tokai lemon top, epiphone les paul ultra and a couple of the vintage les pauls.
this one felt and sounded the nicest out of the lot. great crunchy rock sounds a plenty and the worn look is quite tasteful.

Not the brand 'Vintage'? I hate them!
