Tony Mottola 7 String from 1952!
I love the huge old gibbys, and to see one with 7 strings and 24 frets, a full 30 years before shredz is awesome.

I remember in one of my old Guitar magazines, there was a pretty lengthy section about jazz 7 stringers and how the 7 evolved through jazz. there was lots of (I would assume) cool 7 string licks but I couldn't play any of them because I only have a 6 string

Yeah there is a tradition of 7 string in Jazz and it's not tuned the same as the Ibanez guitars of today.
The guy probably most famous for 7-string guitar was George Van Eps who played a Gretsch 7 string.

That's pretty close to a dream guitar for me. I love it.
I've been thinking about seven strings again. I think I'd want one, but I'd be afraid that it would make me look on all my other guitars as flawed.

Hmm, wouldn't fit in with my idiom, I'm afraid. Although that is pretty cheap.
I think I'll look to pick up either an Epiphone LP (a la Ultra) or a DeArmond. The DeArmonds aren't supposed to be great guitars, but I have an M-65 so it would make a matching set which sort of appeals to me.
Either way, it's not anything like a priority. It's something that I can see myself doing in the next five or so years. I have a list of guitars that I'd like, but not enough to go throwing money at trying to get quickly so I'll wait for a bargain to show up some month when I have a bit of cash left over (a Venus and a Cyclone II would be on the list, for instance).

fo' sho. part of the article was about them experimenting with different tunings to get different voicing and all the . . . . . . . .jazz
When I get a second of free time, I'm going to find that article.
