Hey.I have a wedding coming up and a relatively low paid job doing what I love, so I don't have cash to throw around on stuff that isn't getting drunk. But I've recently sold some stuff on ebay and now I have about £100 to spend on a guitar that's good enough to gig with. What would YOU, wise internet people, go for?

I'd say try and find another 80 quid and buy a used classic vibe

Squier Affinity tele's are pretty solid. Westfields are also decent enough.

I think a Tele style guitar is your best bet as they're such a minimalist design.

That squier tele would be perfect.

You'd just about to be able to find something new, but you'd be lucky to dodge some of the dogs that are around. Second-hand there are quite a few good quality options but it might take a little patience and a bit of an unfussy approach.

A few of the 70s/80s MIJ guitars can be picked up for that if you stick to the less popular brands and less traditional looking models. Aria and Westone are two commonly available ones that can be solid quality but don't command high prices. Keep an eye out for Vester, too.

Aria Mega Metal Stage 3

Outside of the MIJ, there's quite a lot of reasonable Squier stuff that goes cheap. The 80s MIK models do, although they're often the boring black strat with white pickguard variety.

That aria mega metal is on my ebay watch list - its weirdness balances out its metalness. Never heard of Vester before, cheers for that.

Hmmm. I wouldn't suggest anything new for that money. Maybe a Squier Standard series Strat or Tele. Bit unexciting, but the option's there. Often Matsumoku guitars turn-up on ebay and people don't realise it's good quality stuff, so look at Westone, Aria, Hondo Pro. One or two Westone Spectrums on the bay now, but I can't get over their ugly.

I've got a Hondo II copy of a Fender Lead II (previously owned by Ends) that's an excellent guitar. It has bright, chimey pickups and does a kind of new wave out-of-phase sound better than any guitar I've ever played. He paid not much for it and I likewise:

They were a great brand and still widely unknown. The Strats and Tele's (Stage Series i think) were up there with the best copies.
The old USA Peavey stuff is good, Predator, Falcon, Reactor and the T models (which are usually more money). Like James and Timhulio said, some of the old MIJ stuff like Aria Pro, Vantage and Westone, all good.

Some modern brands that are unfashionable are worth looking at like Cort, i've never tried a bad one. Westfield are surprisingly good for the money as well.

They made some nice copies

My brother has two Westones, a sort-of high-end job, Les Paul style with twin cutaways and stupidly good pickups and a Spectrum in black. Both are excellent. Spectrum was about £70 on eBay.

uh-oh.... Just bought one on ebay. It's a made-in-India one, which should make it pre-really-shit, I hope. £90 inc postage so even if it's bollocks I can at least stick some new pick-ups and tuners on it. Mostly I bought it because it was white and I had sudden lawyer-strat lust.

Have a look at my FS thread in the Classifieds, there is still some stuff left. Couple of fairly decent strat copies among them...

I suspect THIS will go for considerably more than £100 but you never know, may be worth keeping an eye on it.
