That's "New Murdered Out Double Cut Junior Day", obviously.
I cannot tell you how much I lived in fear of this deal going south. I missed out on one of the newer Gibson singlecut Junior reissues in black last summer, and was fixing to put a black scratchplate on it. Then a fella who was going to trade me a newer 'burst for my Princeton ghosted me (and I can't tell you how glad I am; I don't play the PRRI so much, but I'd have instantly regretted this trade). This beaut has popped up for sale on thefretboard a few times the last couple of years, and I've always just missed it. Not this time. Traded my Tokai Love Rock and a spare set of Duncans for it.
This is a Maybach. A German-owned brand, the guitars are handmade in the Czech Republic. Lots of chat online that they're close to Custom Shop quality, but every fucker thinks their guitar's the best one.
I can't tell you how much I love it! Really light, the neck's thick but not a monster, quite a D-shaped profile, which is brilliant. It's relicced, which while it isn't my favourite thing, makes me significantly less precious about dinging it. They come with Amber brand P90s, which I like very much indeed.
This is the point where I hold my hands up and say, this is my fifth Junior. Sixth if you'll count an SG Junior. Everytime I've owned one, I've got rid, because I can't get past the fact that when I play a single dogear P90 I CAN SOUND LIKE CAPSLOCK IS ON ALL THE TIME. A large part of this is because I'm stupid, and I refuse to turn the volume down a bit, because that feels like a tonal compromise. This is both my own fault and my problem. I'm really going to try this time.
It's got a nitro finish, I'm usually a right "pointy knees" fusspot about headstock shape, but I think the Maybach's looks like a cross between a Gibson and the Danelectro cola bottle, and I'm entirely at peace with this. I am over the bloody moon lads.
Somewhere along the line, someone's lost the certificate of authenticity (I might contact Maybach about a replacement) and switched the original black knobs for gold (I think I'd have done this - original sale pic below; what do you lot reckon?). Mainly though: hurrah!
Oh also: I'm so pleased to have a black doublecut, because I think doublecuts are far cooler than the already-fairly-cool singlecuts.
