Cheap practice options without a laptop.

So spurred on by getting my MBM dirty little secret back, I would like to sort out a mini practice rig for home.

Currently I've got a marshall origin 20 head with james's old 2x10 cab. It's too fucking loud to get any drive out of it, even with power scaling on it. Plus it's stashed away in a cupboard and not easy to get too.

I'm thinking of getting something kinda preamp pedal I can use through headphones, saving the need to faff around with a laptop or something.

I keep seeing the Valeton dapper mini, which has drive, chorus and delay with a emulated headphone/line out. Would that be a good route to go?

Or maybe a caline/thoman preamp pedal with a headphone amp?

Aren't they like Ã‚Â£300+ quid?

Ideally something that still let's me use some pedals would be great.

I think you want a foundation pedal like a tech 21 blonde or the super cheap clone Harley Benton do (American sound) to give you a nice clean tone and then a simple headphone amplifier after that. You can stack your pedals up front

Or an audio interface and use cheap/free AmpliTube/GarageBand etc

Yeah, similar to your testing rig for pedals, the clones have always on cab sim don't they?

Buy a Pod 2 from ebay I got one for Ã‚Â£25 and its an excellent plug and play practice gizmo

I've seen some of these on eBay recently, seem to be sold under the valeton and sonicake brands too. Looks quite small and some nice sounds. Think I've seen them for about Ã‚Â£25-35 on there.

I love my Mooer Radar, I believe the Mooer preamp pedals basically incorporate the same sort of cab sim.

That said, I prefer to use the Radar after my PLX Spirytus to get that classic Ampeg VH-140C tone even through my TV speakers.

The Radar works well because I can use almost anything to drive it, different practice amps and pedals I've owned and never gotten rid of suddenly become useful again.
