That's "New Murdered Out Double Cut Junior Day", obviously.

I cannot tell you how much I lived in fear of this deal going south. I missed out on one of the newer Gibson singlecut Junior reissues in black last summer, and was fixing to put a black scratchplate on it. Then a fella who was going to trade me a newer 'burst for my Princeton ghosted me (and I can't tell you how glad I am; I don't play the PRRI so much, but I'd have instantly regretted this trade). This beaut has popped up for sale on thefretboard a few times the last couple of years, and I've always just missed it. Not this time. Traded my Tokai Love Rock and a spare set of Duncans for it.

This is a Maybach. A German-owned brand, the guitars are handmade in the Czech Republic. Lots of chat online that they're close to Custom Shop quality, but every fucker thinks their guitar's the best one.

I can't tell you how much I love it! Really light, the neck's thick but not a monster, quite a D-shaped profile, which is brilliant. It's relicced, which while it isn't my favourite thing, makes me significantly less precious about dinging it. They come with Amber brand P90s, which I like very much indeed.

This is the point where I hold my hands up and say, this is my fifth Junior. Sixth if you'll count an SG Junior. Everytime I've owned one, I've got rid, because I can't get past the fact that when I play a single dogear P90 I CAN SOUND LIKE CAPSLOCK IS ON ALL THE TIME. A large part of this is because I'm stupid, and I refuse to turn the volume down a bit, because that feels like a tonal compromise. This is both my own fault and my problem. I'm really going to try this time.

It's got a nitro finish, I'm usually a right "pointy knees" fusspot about headstock shape, but I think the Maybach's looks like a cross between a Gibson and the Danelectro cola bottle, and I'm entirely at peace with this. I am over the bloody moon lads.

Somewhere along the line, someone's lost the certificate of authenticity (I might contact Maybach about a replacement) and switched the original black knobs for gold (I think I'd have done this - original sale pic below; what do you lot reckon?). Mainly though: hurrah!

Oh also: I'm so pleased to have a black doublecut, because I think doublecuts are far cooler than the already-fairly-cool singlecuts.

Congrats! Class as hell.

Personally I'd go back to the black knobs I think, but just personal preference...I liked the gold just fine until I saw the all black pic. Did it come with that case? That's also pretty wild and just looks so special!

Black knobs are ordered, I'll give it a whirl. Yeah, the case is some mad embossed thing.

(I don't actually like it very much, but that's a very moot point, as it will spend the rest of its natural life up in the loft).

Haha, yes!

Gorgeous. I think I like it blacked out, but also wonder what it a nice, darkish tort guard would look like on it.

I like tort on a black Jag, but the Junior that started this whole latest round of the dance (a recent black singlecut reissue with a ridiculous neck that I missed out on by like an hour) had a tort guard. And I always planned to change that to black anyhow. Only the knobs are in question. AxesRUs are on the case.

Sick. I'd go with black knobs also. Maybe oil the shit out of the neck too.

I've always wanted a pink junior, from seeing the tv yellows under red stage lights.

I'd be interested to see how you get on with the Amber pickup after a wee while. I've never heard of them, but price-wise they look like they're higher end. Wonder what the pickup is? Do they do custom? Is there a serial number or model identifier or anything that you can email them and find out?

There's always that itch to get new pickups, but the one that's in there might be a bit different/special to your standard BKP/Lollars/Whatevers.

It's a 90 Standard, I had a peep under there on Saturday. So far, I love it; have had a Bareknuckle, a Duncan and a Zhangbucker before, and this one seems less CAPSLOCK. Not sure if it's maybe wound less hot?

"about" 8.8k they say on their website, which feels hottish for "vintage." But then that doesn't really mean anything in the real world. I know that some have a trick of taking a hotter pickup and leaving it fairly far away from the strings, so you get the big bodied chimes but without the squishy lack of sustain. Best of both worlds.

Can get addictive (and expensive!) fretting about this stuff, and I suppose that most of the end result can probably be achieved just by paying attention to the gain and eq on your amp. But that's no fun.

Not CAPSLOCK is a good way of describing the difference I felt when I installed a Bulldog P-90 in the neck of my tele, but I had it tapped so that there's very definitely a CAPSLOCK option too.

KNOBDATE: I put the black knobs on, and it made me miss the gold ones. However, the old gold knobs were a bad fit, so I've ordered a replacement pair of gold ones like the new black ones (hope you can follow this), as well as some amber ones, as I'm loathe to pay more for the postage than I do for the items. We will get to the bottom of this, but maybe at agonising length.
