Boss PX-1

I'm not sure why I hate this, but I think I do.

i hate the price...

but i could see some potential here, but only if you can chain multiples of them together and control them like a bank with preset models assigned. i get that at that point, though, you're basically creating a multi-fx floor solution, but it'd be modular. if you only ever need to have 3 effects engaged at any given time, just get 3. if you need 6, get 6, etc.

for me, that's been the forever problem i have with pedals -- switching between multiples mid-song, especially when you have multiple types with different heights and sizes. my feet aren't smart enough. god help you if you have multiple effects you want to switch on/off simultaneously. i love the concept of the Gig Rig, but it's so damned spendy (getting worse now, THANKS TRUMP). getting the analog accessibility of pedals with their pots but the efficiency of digital switching in a solution that's uniform in layout is attractive.

then i go back to the price, though.

That's exactly how the Zooms work (if I've read you right).

I generally like the modern multi fx, so I don't know why this one irks me.

Because it looks like it came out of one of those arcade games with the little crane that grabs stuff and drops it in a bin?

i've seen the Zoom MS 50 and 70, and, technically, yes that is correct -- they'll do just that and cheaper. i hate the convoluted layout, though. like, four of those pedals, and you've now got 16 knobs, 16 menu pads...so like, 32 controls before you even turn the damn things on. yeesh.

what attracts me to something like the Boss would be the cleaner UI: fewer knobs, menu-driven screen, and an activator. done. i'm way oversimplifying, i'm sure.

i should probably check out the Zooms anyway...maybe i'd like them, idk.

It's also a "8 models included, additional ones will cost you, and you'll need an app" scenario, which always feels gross.

Aesthetically, it looks like dogshit too; messing with the very standardised Boss layout to cram that Tiger Electronics screen in there to show you the controls for the digitally-recreated Boss Overdrive that everyone is apparently clamouring for.

โ–บ Show Spoiler

Also, it's a mix of models you'd want at different positions in your chain, with no loop to be able to route things cleverly against your other pedals. Feels like an idea that woulda popped-off 10 years ago, but everyone knows better now.

The while software design/purchase thing got Colin a tad heated -

^didn't have time to watch the whole vid, but he's absolutely right. to take his point further, this is a trial balloon of making your gear's capabilities a licensed model rather than a one-and-done purchase -- endless revenue stream! DAWs went this route several years ago, and all those FX are at your fingertips for a monthly fee. i've made my peace with that mostly, recognizing the insidiousness of tethering someone's art to rented VSTs...one war at a time.

but on a pedal? fuck no, and not an amp either before they ask...

...okay so they want you to buy an amp, too. fucking hell.

Boss's's business model for a while has bugged me.

The Waza pedals, those are just pedals. Like, their thing is "we took your favourite XX-5 and we've improved it. It now has a few new features and a better something or other." It used to be that Boss just called that the XX-6.
