my $80 1965 jaguar in pieces(FXD/PICS)

Post by ROBERT(OG) »

I picked this up from an older fella here in town. he had this picture and a couple of others for sale and i believe it just said, "parts" 50 bucks. I got a hold of him immediately and we arranged to meet at the local CVS. he pulled out 4 or 5 boxes. the Jaguar was mostly all in one box, but he had some parts that he thought might be a part of it, like the bass bridge cover, and a couple of other things.
we get to talking and he reveals that his brother used to "fiddle" with guitars in the 90s and this was all of his stuff. he even had receipts.
when I got everything back home I started going though, what amounted to, someones stash of parts from YEARS of messing with instruments. one of the coolest things that I found was a PRINTED receipt from STEWARTMCDONALD on the old school printer paper with a date of 1992(I think)
the only thing I think that was actually missing from the Jaguar (besides the finish) was the plunger and spring for the mute.

this, obviously, is the neck and guard. I sent the body out to get sprayed since at the time I had no booth and was winging it in my garage.
I have the guard screwed down with the o.g. screws to a template of a 63 that I made close to 20 years ago to help keep its shape, as well as a clamp for one part that has a slight "bubble"

the pictures of stuff laid out on a blanket, that's what he sent me. He actually got ahold me ME! to see if I wanted to buy a "lot" of parts. then he sent me the pictures and a story about how he acquired it all. Iit was before I got a car so I had to call up one of my buddies to take me for the transaction.
AFTER I paid him and had everything in the car I showed him my Jaguar tattoo and told him that what he just sold me was worth a few grand just as it sat in pieces. and I did offer more than he asked, and he didn't even want to take all that I offered.
I last talked to the shop who were in charge of re-finishing the body for me early last week and I got a projected time of 3-4 more weeks,(its been 8 months or so already)

honestly man. im not sure. when I first spoke with them I told them, "hey, I can do this, but I don't want to wait until it warms up, and my booth isn't ready yet."
and I get the feeling that the person they used was in the same boat as myself.... maybe just waiting on weather to clear up. either way. I am going to be SUPER critical of it.
and I feel that I am justified in the mindset of, "I'm not going to pay for something less than I could have done"
and that sentiment is really just based on the conversation I had with the store employee, who I believe was talking out of his fucking ass.

the shop isn't far, I was bogged down with the frat houses during the school year otherwise I would have dropped it off and made a weekend out of it. now that I'm off for the summer, who knows.
part of what "irks" me was the lack of communication on their end. I got an initial call that they had received it, and wanted to clarify that I indeed was after a 3 tone sunburst in nitro. I emailed 2 times, called 3 times, and then finally got a call back. (the first two calls werent during business hours and I left a voicemail, 3rd call I caught them during business hours) and after that 3rd call I finally got a call back from "the guy". and he was just telling me shit about the weather and the nature of Nitrocellulose.... stuff that I know, and have known. it was cute. I sent my business card with it. I told them I was passing on doing it myself because of weather and lack of booth, they said that was not an issue for "their guy"
all in all though. even if I NEVER see that body again. I still have EVERYTHING else to make a 65 Jaguar, and I can just make a body, sure it won't be truly vintage. but its better than nothing, and still worth WAY more than I paid.

Get it back, linseed oil or shellac, rock the fuck out of it and one day paint it yourself.

as temping as it was to just "rock it" as is. It deserves a proper paint job. even now, its very tempting, and somewhat surprising that I haven't done it already, but I have a Jaguar body that I made out of ash a while back, just hanging out. wouldn't take much to finish it. throw it together and roll with that for a while. but, in the end. not worth it. then I would have a Jaguar body sitting around that would take ages to sell.
