70's strat love

there's been a fair old mention of 70's era fender on here this week. thought i'd continue that by asking peeps what they think about this

it's not all original, but sounds like it's been modded for the better. they've just dropped the price to Â£899. i'm tempted.

if you could get rid of that hellish guard for a black one it would look quite nice. they do weigh a ton though, one of my mates has a '78 and it's a beast.

Always play before you buy in CBS land. There are some gems out there and some real dogs.

Yep, I'd advise caution dungeoneer; not wishing to be a naysayer, but for a comparatively rare beast such as that one to have stuck around in the UK long enough to have come down Â£100 in price, it might well be terrible, cursed or both. But go and play it anyway.

I tried loads of these in Denmark Street when I was going through a phase. It's really hit-n-miss. Build quality, sound. Those '77 (or '79 I can never remember) silver finished anniversary strats are the worst. They seem to be everywhere, and for every one decent one there's half a dozen dogs. It's a cliche, but the ones with the most natural wear are usually the better examples. Definately try beforehand...

I'd opt for a Highway One rob. Basically its mostly 70's spec but much cheaper, more consistent and more available.

yes i know it's not always possible but yeah definitely try to play and touch before paying.
70s fenders -and specially strats- can be the sweet bargain or the lemon of the century. i've been lucky enough to find a '73 and a thrashed '72 for under $500, and kept the '72... (routed and kinda re-shaped, non original pups (duncan ssl-2 IIRC) and pickguard.)

but back on subject, mid-late 70s strats are usually lifeless boat anchors. REAL heavy. believe me, i swear i'm no puff sissy, but these things are just TOO damn heavy to even be fun. we're talking les paul custom kinda heavy, seriously.

now most of us here play mostly mustangs and so, i guess... so you might hate that one. but give it a shot. maybe you get one of the good ones!

i'm going guitar/amp shopping tomorrow, now i've finally got my uber overtime pay. it's either gonna be an amp a guitar or maybe a guitar and pedals.

yes it was the previous owner that did all of this to the guitar. he's about 16 by now...

somehow he always evaded the answers when i asked about WHY THE FUCK he did that to a perfectly nice vintage guitar.
oh and he threw the original pickups etc. away!
