I just remembered this kid I went to middle school with. All he would talk about, LITERALLY EVERYTHING, was about how much he hated gays and wanted to kill them all. And if anyone told him to stop he'd accuse them of being gay.

He came out of the closet 3 months into high school. It was AWESOME.

I don't find stories like that funny or ironic. The sad truth is that he behaved that way because he was struggling to deal with the way American culture treats gay men. The real irony here is that it's things like prop 8 being voted against that create that culture.

I think answer to 'why this battle and not one that is more important?' is partly that a guitar is something very personal, you literally hold it in your hands the whole time you use it, you interact with it in a way that is intimate enough for people (douches, I admit) to often name them. To have that relationship with an inanimate object and know that the money you spent on that is funding donations to vote against prop 8 cheapens the whole process like finding out the stunning brunette you've been having such a great time with lately is also knocking off your dad. But really I think the main thing is that it is very attainable. We all know the feeling of being powerless to respond to the might of business but I'm sure the majority do small things to 'do what they can'. Buying free range or organic eggs is something that is a small step in a good direction, and in the grand scheme of things its not much more than a token gesture. Is not buying a danelectro guitar going to solve the bigotry we're talking about here? Absolutely not, but if this sort of boycott is actually hurting their sales than perhaps further donations won't happen from the owner, and maybe a few other small business would be scared out of doing the same. It's obviously a small impact but I honestly think for those of us in our 20s and 30s now, within our lifetime we can see a reduction in homophobia similar to that in racism over the past 50 years.

And also the comment about the way American society treats gay men can just as easily be used in the UK, too. It might be "better" in a relative sense, in that we have many more openly gay politicians and celebrities, but they become reduced down to the same old medieval stereotypes in the media as often as they do in the US media, which is even more extreme in its denounciations of anything "immoral" or similar.

I've played a few of the reissues . Last one was the Dead On Hornet one Also played a 59 reissue and a Longhorn . Loved the look but the thing had zero sustain , buzzed like a bee and looked like it was put together by a couple of special needs 12 year olds . And the pickups ? I could make better pickups with a fucking spool of cheap wire and a AA battery. A Jerry Jones on the other hand is nice but the prices want to make me spoon my eyes out . Take a Dano and make it with Jerry Jones quality and still have a Dano price and then we're talking . As for the Longhorn bass ? Like it . Sounded good . But the build of it ? Vinyl trim looking like it's gonna peel on the first warm day . The cheap plastic knobs ? I passed it . I know all about the cheap charm but if I wanted cheap charm I'd get a Tiesco . It it wasn't for Led Zeppelin those masonite pieces of shit would be known better for being door stoppers or pinata whackers. Sorry for the hate bomb , Man.

Your argument has less validity than it started out with.

How does a guitar look like it was put together by 12 year old special needs kids? It's a simple construction style, and I've never seen one that had any major flaws in finish or woodwork.

The pickups? I'm sorry they're not EMGs, but they are fantastic. A bit weak yes, but they chime easily and have their own sound. I've recorded with them, and play out with them and although I could swing it and have thought about it, I haven't upgraded my 12 string to a Rickenbacker because I actually PREFER the feel and sound of the Danelectro to a Ric 12 string. Better quality instrument for sure, but the Dano is far easier to play and even with the stock pickups it sounds pretty damn close.

A price on a Jerry Jones has made you want to spoon your eyes out? You would've saved me the trouble of replying to your troll ass if you followed through. I've seen several in my local shop for around $550-$700 or so...and honestly they played no different than the Danos I've had and played.

Don't like the tape? Pull it off, or replace it if it peels....or buy one of the models that didn't come with it in the first place. The tape on both of mine are holding up well, and I gig with the DC-12 about twice a month and practice weekly. Cheap plastic knobs? For fucks sake man, MOST guitars have cheap plastic knobs.

On the other hand, I have played very few Teiscos that did NOT have horrible necks, tuners that did not keep tune, and electronics that buzzed, were microphonic, or barely worked at all.

If you're not intentionally trolling, your rhetoric skills are seriously lacking. You used an abrasive tone to bait someone, but when he responded almost point-by-point to you in a relatively calm manner (save for one sentence), you responded by latching on to that one sentence and tried to bait him again.

The statement about using a "real guitar" is particularly laughable, and the only reason I have chosen to stick my nose back in here. I have tried using every guitar I own to cop a particular sound I have in my head, and no guitar I own but my '90s DC 59 reissue even comes close. I purchased it used at Guitar Center for $74 after using a $25 gift card, making it by far the least costly instrument I own -- but it's just got that sound.

At any rate, here's another talentless cockgobbler playing like shit on one of those fucking abominable Dano '63 guitars -- a god damned reissue that does little to improve on the appalling design of the original guitar its design is based upon.

Even with busted frets, I pretty much have to plug my dano in at least once a week in order to play some slide guitar. It sounds brilliant, and always has done.

Dano's were designed to make the most of limited materials. They used lipstick casings for the pickups, bakelite knobs and had wooden bridges, among many, many other things. And they sounded great. My danelectro was my first "proper" guitar that I'd spent my own money on. Up to 2000, I'd been using a crappy parts guitar with a broken floyd rose and rubbish EMG copies. The Dano was like a Godsend. Not a proper guitar? Bullshit. The thing was like playing a PRS to my sixteen year old hands at the time. It was brilliant.

It gave me a true appreciation for "proper" guitars, not because I aspired to move on from it, but because it was a proper guitar.

Most importantly in a college full of Ibanez's and mummy-and-daddy-bought Gibson Les Pauls, it turned heads, and it held its own (once I began to really improve).

That's why we're all so appalled at the links to homophobia. These are guitars we love, and classic designs that we're not entirely comfortable with being forcefully associated with the machinery of oppression.

Eh, I called you a troll for the reasons that avj posted. I personally can't stand when someone backs up their side of an argument with little to nothing more than exaggerated expletives. I'm sorry but "looks like it was put together by a couple of special needs 12 year olds", or prices that make you "want to spoon your eyes out", are not terms of measuring quality or value in my book, and I somehow doubt your ability to construct a decent pickup with "cheap wire and a AA battery." Also, never have I said that you criticized me and not just danelectros....again, that's another symptom of trolling, like it or not.

I can understand if that's your way of talking or whatever but on the internet where you can't really tell someone's tone of voice it's just a bad way to get your point across. Guitars are very personal belongings to the people who play them, and to tell someone that a guitar they use is a piece of shit that would be used as a door stop or pinata wacker (wtf?) if it weren't for Jimmy Page is a pretty strong slap in the face as well as just plain ignorant. Talking that way to people about their gear isn't going to make you any friends.

Thanks for the compliments on my playing but I do in fact own many "real guitars", and have owned many more before them. I also have worked in a music store for several years with the privilege of setting up and playing many different guitars, both vintage and new, from cheap to way out of my price range, and I stand my ground that for the most part Danelectros are a solid players guitar and a great value for the money. If you're talking about my girlfriend's Dano convertible I demoed in the Youtube video, and not the 12 string on my band's reverb nation page I linked to, then yes it is in fact a very odd bird but I still love it. It's basically meant to be a traveler guitar when it's unplugged. It does not have much sustain at all because it has a trapeze tailpiece and a very slight break angle at the bridge. I didn't have it plugged in because my amp needed new tubes and was acting up at the time I made the video so you're hearing its acoustic properties only which isn't very much.

Here's a vid of a guy playing the same model plugged in. Notice how the lack of sustain actually compliments the fast arpeggios to clean up the sound a bit.

Oh and as for that Derek Trucks vid avj linked to, I wouldn't trust his opinion in gear anyway....He's playing with a G7 capo, by far the worst overpriced clamp style capo I've ever owned (and I got mine for free). I'll take my kaiser over it any day.

I intended to add an extra bit to that to say I didn't mean that it's particularly worse in America. I was initially going to say Western, but attitudes vary a lot (the Polish for example are, based on those I've met much more homophobic than is typical for the UK) and American was the easiest way to describe the culture that directly related to the guy in question.

I think it's likely quite different in the US and UK but roughly on par in terms of acceptance. It wasn't meant as anti-American, just specific to the case.
