Hey Joey, What kinda of wood is the body made of? I thought you might been able to tell while you were repairing it.

It wasn't Poplar, because of the sunburst finish for sure. So it's either Ash or Alder. Ash has em big grains & Alder grains are subtle. It's hard to tell cause of the milky yellow finish Fender sprayed to hide imperfections. My guess would be Ash though.

The project Mustang will be out of Ash. Ash is more trebly than Alder. I will do some research on the Sunburst Mustangs and see if I can figure it out. Did you use Reranch Nitro for the finish?

I did some research on this Mustang History website and he pretty much said that all Mustangs in the Late 1970s were Ash. He thinks they never did any in alder. Pretty interesting for sure. Makes me wonder if my 1978 Musicmaster was also Ash. My AVRI Jaguar is Alder, but it may be the only one.

I'm pretty sure all of the AVRIs are alder. I don't actually know, but all of the ones I have encountered were alder.

I think I had a little bit of ReRanch sealer left over, used what I had. But most of the sealer was done using my spraying rig with Parks nitrocellulose sanding & sealer. The color is translucent black, not opaque black. It's from the ReRanch sunburst kit. The clear was all done with ReRanch Clear, since I had a full can left over. All the ReRanch stuff was leftover from other projects, I always buy more then I need cause rattle can paint don't have a shelf life and it's cheaper to buy more then to... fuck up & have to pay for more paint & shipping cost.

I would imagine Fender would be using poplar on opaque finishes through the 60's & 70's. And ash & alder on sunburst. I've been under the impression that alder was used in the 60's & by the 70's it was just ash. That's just off the top of my head, I couldn't say for sure. Somebody else will chime in.
