I've heard bad things about Xaviere quality control. I'd just stick with Squier or Rondo.

The only person I know who has one, an xaviere, is Rob and he loves it. They seem pretty well reviewed over on HC as well.

On the other hand, I have been interested in buying a Tele thinline from them, and then someone on HCEG Forum bought one and wrote me to tell me that he's extremely unhappy with the purchase. The string ferrule holes were drilled very poorly and the bridge was just slapped on there to try to hide the bad woodwork. Apparently this made restringing it close to impossible. When he brought this up, they offered a $30 discount, that's it.

Anyway, every report of GFS mentions that their customer service isn't what it used to be.

i almost put that, but thought i was dangerously close to playing it out. i say PANK on shortscale, and IRL like at least 3x a day.

as for the string through hole issue, $30 is adequate compensation for the short time with a drill press that would be required.

While not guitars, I buy extensively from their parts/pickup dept. Never had a bad incident, their CS has always been quick to respond to any issues.

Well, you'd have to dowel the old holes first, and if you wanted a project guitar, you can find those all over the place.

Oh, and apparently Fender neck did not fit it.

p.s. I myself have bought a few cheapies and only the Douglas Classic is in what I'd consider perfect condition out of the box. I'm just not sure Xaviere is worth it because the horror stories seem just that much worse than the Rondo stories, and Rondo has free shipping for exchange.

I've bought a few GFS items myself. I think the shop is all right, and the parts certainly are sometimes worth it. But a whole guitar is a different thing.

I can honestly say after buy new rondos, squiers and fenders... my worst out of the box was the fender. Oddly the Rondo was probably the best, though still definitely not perfect.

For my money, perfect out of the box is a myth at any pricepoint.

I have heard of the inconsistencies of fender necks fitting. Rob had no problem but I remember others on HC complaining it was a no go.

Yeah my banana yellow Douglas Classic was actually perfect out of the box. Everything is perfectly aligned and in perfect condition, looks and sounds great, too. It really feels just as good as a much more expensive guitar, and even the routing under the pickguard is nice, clean, and well done as well, the frets are perfect, too. I don't consider having to turn the truss rod, adjust bridge height, changing strings to be "work," I consider it just something that should be done to any guitar that has recently gone through UPS. Things being slightly off center, poorly cut pick guards, bad routing jobs, these are all problems I've had with other cheapies. Most of these things don't affect playability, but they do remind you that it's a cheapie, but the Classic is perfect in that sense.

The thing about Fender is that you're generally purchasing them from a reputable dealer like Sweetwater who will generally have free shipping and make returns and exchanges painless and easy. But yeah, I'm a huge Squier fan and I think it is an amazing deal these days for a new Squier because you usually get a great guitar for less, Fender-spec parts, the benefit of free shipping through big distributors, and better resale value in the end as well. Anyway, every single Squier I've had have been recent models and they've all been amazing unless I fucked them up myself. The only problem I consistently have with Squier is sloppy fret ends.

Yeah, squires fret ends can be a bit rough. Nothing like that blacktop was though. Fucking thing had daggers coming odd the frets. And ths skunk stripe wasn't completed seated before sealing so there's a slight ridge in the back. After working the frets a bit and a a half assed attempt at sanding down the ridge it's actually a pretty nice neck... but it shouldn't have the effort to get it there.

Oh, my one experience buying a Blacktop was horrible. I bought a blacktop Jaguar for a very nice price from Musician's Friend, it was apparently an open box, and it was easy to see why it had been returned. The Tune-O-Matic bridge was just terrible, I could not get that thing low enough to have a decent action and the screw couldn't be turned because it got stuck in the pickguard. After some bit of work and a shim, I had a setup where the action was reasonably low, but it wasn't as low as I could get on a Mustang without buzzing, and needless to say, that's terrible for a hardtail guitar.

But I think this is partly the design, the Blacktop offsets just seem like blatant attempts at making them crappy guitars so that people still have a reason to buy the much better CP Jags and Jazzes. I think the Blacktop Strat and Tele are quite nice, though.
