The burns style pickups I was talking about for this guitar are actually strat sized versions as seen on these:


If they sound like you describe standard Tri-Sonics I'll probably love em

I think they are just strat pickups with oversize magnets and metal covers. not a true attempt at cloning a tri-sonic. the GFS marketing spiels they give for their pickups are mostly nonsense.

Hmmm, I know they tend to exaggerate largely but considering the description seems to try to deter fans of normal "strat" sounding pickups from buying it to avoid disappointment, I think there might be some truth to it.

Also oddly enough, their now discontinued GFS Brooklyn hi-lo tron clones are one of my favorite aftermarket pickups I've had in a guitar. I know they make a quality product, but yeah their product descriptions are so colorful they're off putting at times

On that note does anyone know of any other similar non-traditional pickups that will fit a standard strat route? Something that looks along the lines of these or the Lace Alumitones (but I already decided I don't like the sound or idea of the Lace ones even though they look cool as fook)

Well, I think if I get them I will get the Vintage Spec set that doesn't have the reverse wound middle pickup. You make a valid point, as every time I've tried to start with a strat and make it something different I never like the results....I may end up having to embrace its characteristics to a point and make subtle mods.

For the lot of good it'll do me I emailed GFS about them explaining I can't find any info on how they sound when not used for playing like Brian May through a Vox amp and asking if they'll suit my needs.

Reverse wound doesn't kill your tone, despite what cork sniffers will tell you.

I think it's simple, really, don't wire your Strat pickups to a 5-way that has the standard positions. Then your guitar won't sound like a Strat.

Well my only reason for wanting the non reverse one is because they only make it available in the matched set with the hotter middle pickup and hottest bridge pickup. Considering I most often use the bridge pickup and don't want a hot sound, I guess that's what I should go with.

I do kind of like the simplicity my Vox XII offers, with the three way blade switch. If I end up replacing all the electronics eventually I may go that route. I never even usually use the middle positions in my two pickup guitars anyway
