Some feedback based on our lead guitarist's experience.

Pro:
Completely tone-netutral and no problem with mincabs, taxis or your local church's wireless microphone system (oh yes!) because it uses an encrypted digital link. You can actually select top cut to simulate loss of highs in a long cable.

Con:
He's had two and the belt/strap clip fell off both of them - apparently just glued/spot welded. It's why he's given up on them.
More than twice the price of an AKG bug.

He needs one for rehearsal, tbh, otherwise he keeps turning round in the same direction and ends up with his 20' cable in a humungous knot.

Hahahaaaa, that's a pretty poor excuse for the use of a wireless system. Get him some Ritalin, slap him upside the head and tell him to sit still.

Well, he use to be a professional bassist. He's not as bad as the vocalist in my son Matt's band, he's like a dervish. After they played a 30-minute set that I watched, the sound man held up the mic lead in disbelief and showed it to the audience like "how the hell am I supposed to untangle this?"

If I saw a band of people twisting their leads up like Morris dancers on crack I would leave the venue.

If I saw a band with wireless systems running in circles I would leave the venue.

You're not gaining much here.

the guitarist in my drummer's old band used wireless packs. he used to jump off the stage and run round the venue as the 4 or so people watching them cringed with embarrassment. awful.

If you heard a band playing mostly Free and Bad Company covers, you'd probably leave the venue, too. Right?

I don't really see the problem with running/jumping around on stage... I wouldn't use a wireless system though because it seems a silly amount of money to spend when I can untangle leads quite easily.

I move plenty on stage, but running is what I do when I don't have a guitar strapped across my shoulder.

Ah, now I understand. Before I thought you were just completely anti moving around at all. I agree with you that if you're moving enough to necessitate a wireless system, you're probably moving too much. I have been told to buy one by an angry soundman though, whoops...

I used wireless for a short timeperiod. Not for any stage antics reasons, but because we were a 5-6 piece band at the time and we played a bunch of really small stages. All thre of us guitarists and the bassist went wireless to avoid pulling each othere cables out, etc. Also, the guys swithced instruments on and off which wireless made alot easier.

Just to clarify though, even though we had 3 guitars, we almost never had 3 people playing guitar on the same song, and if we did it would be me on acoustic, one electric rhythym/counter rhythym, and one lead. Our lead player also played harmonica, mandolin, and alot of BGV while the second guitar player did some hand percussion.

The wireless was simpy to make a crowded stage a little less crowded and a little less likely to pull out someone's cable/flip someone's amp on accident. It was also helpful for sound checking as we did ourt own sound on most of the gigs.

i used a wireless system on my bass a few years ago, only lasted a few gigs before i got fucked off with it. i prefer the security of a solid cable going into an amp rather than something that if it fucks up, it fucks up big style. sure, cables fuck up to but easier to switch a cable out and plug in direct if need be.

Morris Dancing is clearly a cover for Terrorist Cell meetings. There is no other explanation.
