Lowest Profile Cable Plugs

Post by Bacchus »

In case it's of interest to pedalboard nerds:

I'm about to reconfigure things on my board and needed more patch cables, which means more pancake plugs. Previously, I've used Hicon ones which always seemed to be about as slim as you could get. Better still, Aliexpress and the likes are filled with copies/unbranded versions, so they are readily available and cheap.

I've always been a little irritated by how much space the take up on the surface of the pedal, though, and although I haven't yet got to the point where I've had to file away sections of the case, there have been a few close calls.

This time, I noticed that Rean also do a pancake jack, with a much more pedal friendly surface area. Aliexpress is also full of these jacks, so they are readily available and cheap. A bit of googling led me to believe that it wasn't actually any thinner, though.

It seems that the best pancake jack on the market now is something called a Squareplug SP400. This is smaller in terms of surface, but is also apparently lower profile. They are pricey, though at about a fiver each. So £10 for a patch cable before I even add cable. Unfortunately, no amount of searching led me to find these cheap an Aliexpress.

However, I did find patch cables already made up with what looks a lot like SP400-a-like plugs on them. If you search for the brand "Miwayer" you find them.

Miwayer Patch Cables

These come with suspiciously familiar looking plugs on them, and are roughly £2 per cable, or £1 per plug. Perfect. I can replace the cable later. Although I'm not entirely certain that they will fit comfortably over the Sommer Spirit cable that I usually use.

They arrived yesterday and they certainly look lower profile. This will probably be my source of pancake plus from now on. I imagine the plugs themselves will appear for sale at some point.

MASSIVE CAVEAT TO ALL OF THIS: I had imagined that the SP400 was being made by some massive company, but googling found a TGP thread where it sounds like it's a bit of a labour of love by one guy.

And now I feel a bit shitty. But do with it what you want.

The lowest profile patch cables I’ve ever found are the EBS Gold Flats. They come in at just under 11mm. But they only come in a few set sizes (10, 18, 28, 58cm). They are quality though.

For some reason I don't like not having cables the correct length, and I want to have the same Sommer cable all the way through. Which is silly, I know, but it limits me to plugs that I can put my own cable into.

A video that I haven't watched:
